Pharmacist Prescribing
There’s been much in the news about Alberta's first pharmacist-led primary healthcare clinic opening in Lethbridge. This Pharmacist Walk-in Clinic will offer a range of healthcare services to patients, including assessment and treatment of common ailments and injuries. Wait…what about here in Manitoba? Well by golly – YES – we can do that here too! It may not be fully funded by MB Health but many pharmacist have undergone special training to PRESCRIBE for common and some acute conditions.
Access to primary healthcare services has been an ongoing issue across the country for some time and was most recently exacerbated by Covid-19. The expanded scope of practice for pharmacists in Manitoba and in Alberta, however, is making it easier for patients to get access to the services they need.
Pharmacists in the province of Manitoba have the ability to assess patients and prescribe medications for minor illnesses and injuries, administer vaccines and other medications by injection, support chronic disease management and order and receive lab results. Making these services available in a pharmacist-run clinic, like the Apothecary of Morden, means a reduction in urgent care and emergency room visits and ultimately leading to better health outcomes for patients, AND patient satisfaction.
Community pharmacists are uniquely positioned not only to relieve some of the burden on the province's healthcare system but also to provide timely meaningful patient-focused care. Specially trained pharmacists in Manitoba can prescribe for urinary tract infections, smoking cessation, allergic conditions, nausea in pregnancy, eczema, fungal infections, and other minor ailments.
Apothecary of Morden continues to live up to its mission: “to provide meaningful experiences and supportive products to maximize your health and quality of life” through both in-store and virtual appointment services. In this unique, community-based clinic/pharmacy environment, there are many opportunities for collaborative care with other healthcare providers to foster a complete approach to patient care.
The Apothecary of Morden clinic services are available from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday via appointment or by walk-in (wait times may vary). To book an appointment or for other inquiries please contact our clinic directly at 204-822-5222.
